Mark, a little bit of background information

The book of Mark, is written by John Mark act12:12-25, 13, 15, col4, philomen4, 1pt 2tim

he's a relative, Mary's son

Barnabas' nephew is Mark, Paul & Barnabas had a falling out because of Mark

at the end of Paul's life Paul calls Mark back

There's thought that Mark puts himself into the text as the boy that ran away,

Mark is attempting to write in written form the oral tradition of the apostles... help to Peter

Acts 10:34-43
Act 10:34   So Peter opened his mouth and said: "Truly I understand that God shows no partiality,
Act 10:35   but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him.
Act 10:36   As for the word that he sent to Israel, preaching good news of peace through Jesus Christ (he is Lord of all),
Act 10:37   you yourselves know what happened throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee after the baptism that John proclaimed:
Act 10:38   how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.
Act 10:39   And we are witnesses of all that he did both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree,
Act 10:40   but God raised him on the third day and made him to appear,
Act 10:41   not to all the people but to us who had been chosen by God as witnesses, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead.
Act 10:42   And he commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one appointed by God to be judge of the living and the dead.
Act 10:43   To him all the prophets bear witness that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name."

this is the tradition that Mark is trying to write this down

the timing is vague, maybe near Peter's life

Mt, Mk, Luke, synoptic, they have mostly the same content

Mark's gospel speaks of Jesus who He was, its still the same message, we see Him as a servant, Mark-Jesus the Servant, Mat-Jesus the King, Luke-Jesus the Man.

Mark is writing as a servant, restored by Paul

the time it was written: Emperor Nero, Paul in prison, Peter preaching

Nero was raising taxes, oppressing,

its assumed he burned the whole city, to avoid suspicion on himself, Nero blamed Christians

Rome was done with many religions,

Nero chose Christians to be the blame for the fires, he starts killing Christians who were put into arenas to be killed by animals, also Christians were put on poles killed

Mark's heart as a Pastor was to write to the Romans, Christians were meeting in these catacombs where the dead were

Mark was writing to the Christians to persevere, that Christians should suffer because Jesus suffered, Judas betrayed Jesus. Jesus was persecuted by the Pharisees & the Romans were tracking down Jesus

Christians had turned on other Christians, Mark was calling the Christian traders to come back because there was still time for them to come back.

The gospel of Mark, its Jesus is always heading to the cross

the first chapters Mark 1-8 is all about Jesus' ministry

the next 8 chapters is about Jesus going to the cross

Mark is relaying the message: You need to evaluate where you are at, what are you going to do with Jesus, Jesus is reliable

at the end of Mark's gospel the disciples all abandon Jesus

We can take & relate Mark's gospel & bring the teachings of Jesus into our lives today

Jesus continues to serve God the Father & Jesus acts righteously in the face of persecution

We can feel what is being described

This gospel is about Jesus the Faithful Servant of God

Focusing on Jesus' acts

any questions

Let's read Mark1

Ryan: the Christians were persecuted for no reason, is it because Christians wouldn't call Nero Lord?

Tony: I don't know, but Christians were isolating themselves from the debauchery of Rome, maybe that's why Nero chose to persecute The Christians. Does that answer you're question

Valerie: I took a class... Nero was trying to kill everyone... the fire didn't work, so Nero chose to blame the Christians who were the underdogs that no one liked.

Tony: I believe Nero killed both Paul & Peter

We're going to read the whole chapter, we'll try to hit as much as we can

after reading Mark1
what do you see stand out to you

male: Jesus ministering.

Tony: Immediately Jesus serves

Valerie: Jesus is very active, though He's giving out lots of power, Jesus takes a moment to pray to get power from the Father.

Tony: Being a servant Jesus has to find out what to do from the Father

anything missing

male: the birth account of Jesus

Tony: no genealogy, the book of Mark goes directly to the beginning of the good news

What is the good news, what is the gospel?

Jan: forgiveness of sins, salvation

male: grace

Tony: I think Paul describes the good news in 1cor15
www.blb.org NLT 1Corinthians

1Cr 15:1   Let me now remind you, dear brothers and sisters,[fn1] of the Good News I preached to you before. You welcomed it then, and you still stand firm in it.
1Cr 15:2   It is this Good News that saves you if you continue to believe the message I told you—unless, of course, you believed something that was never true in the first place.[fn2]
1Cr 15:3   I passed on to you what was most important and what had also been passed on to me. Christ died for our sins, just as the Scriptures said.
1Cr 15:4   He was buried, and he was raised from the dead on the third day, just as the Scriptures said.
1Cr 15:5   He was seen by Peter[fn3] and then by the Twelve.
1Cr 15:6   After that, he was seen by more than 500 of his followers[fn4] at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have died.
1Cr 15:7   Then he was seen by James and later by all the apostles.
1Cr 15:8   Last of all, as though I had been born at the wrong time, I also saw him.
1Cr 15:9   For I am the least of all the apostles. In fact, I'm not even worthy to be called an apostle after the way I persecuted God's church.
1Cr 15:10   But whatever I am now, it is all because God poured out his special favor on me—and not without results. For I have worked harder than any of the other apostles; yet it was not I but God who was working through me by his grace.
1Cr 15:11   So it makes no difference whether I preach or they preach, for we all preach the same message you have already believed.
1Cr 15:12   But tell me this—since we preach that Christ rose from the dead, why are some of you saying there will be no resurrection of the dead?
1Cr 15:13   For if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised either.
1Cr 15:14   And if Christ has not been raised, then all our preaching is useless, and your faith is useless.
1Cr 15:15   And we apostles would all be lying about God—for we have said that God raised Christ from the grave. But that can't be true if there is no resurrection of the dead.
1Cr 15:16   And if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised.
1Cr 15:17   And if Christ has not been raised, then your faith is useless and you are still guilty of your sins.
1Cr 15:18   In that case, all who have died believing in Christ are lost!
1Cr 15:19   And if our hope in Christ is only for this life, we are more to be pitied than anyone in the world.
1Cr 15:20   But in fact, Christ has been raised from the dead. He is the first of a great harvest of all who have died.
1Cr 15:21   So you see, just as death came into the world through a man, now the resurrection from the dead has begun through another man.
1Cr 15:22   Just as everyone dies because we all belong to Adam, everyone who belongs to Christ will be given new life.
1Cr 15:23   But there is an order to this resurrection: Christ was raised as the first of the harvest; then all who belong to Christ will be raised when he comes back.
1Cr 15:24   After that the end will come, when he will turn the Kingdom over to God the Father, having destroyed every ruler and authority and power.
1Cr 15:25   For Christ must reign until he humbles all his enemies beneath his feet.
1Cr 15:26   And the last enemy to be destroyed is death.
1Cr 15:27   For the Scriptures say, "God has put all things under his authority."[fn5] (Of course, when it says "all things are under his authority," that does not include God himself, who gave Christ his authority.)
1Cr 15:28   Then, when all things are under his authority, the Son will put himself under God's authority, so that God, who gave his Son authority over all things, will be utterly supreme over everything everywhere.
1Cr 15:29   If the dead will not be raised, what point is there in people being baptized for those who are dead? Why do it unless the dead will someday rise again?
1Cr 15:30   And why should we ourselves risk our lives hour by hour?
1Cr 15:31   For I swear, dear brothers and sisters, that I face death daily. This is as certain as my pride in what Christ Jesus our Lord has done in you.
1Cr 15:32   And what value was there in fighting wild beasts—those people of Ephesus[fn6]—if there will be no resurrection from the dead? And if there is no resurrection, "Let's feast and drink, for tomorrow we die!"[fn7]
1Cr 15:33   Don't be fooled by those who say such things, for "bad company corrupts good character."
1Cr 15:34   Think carefully about what is right, and stop sinning. For to your shame I say that some of you don't know God at all.
1Cr 15:35   But someone may ask, "How will the dead be raised? What kind of bodies will they have?"
1Cr 15:36   What a foolish question! When you put a seed into the ground, it doesn't grow into a plant unless it dies first.
1Cr 15:37   And what you put in the ground is not the plant that will grow, but only a bare seed of wheat or whatever you are planting.
1Cr 15:38   Then God gives it the new body he wants it to have. A different plant grows from each kind of seed.
1Cr 15:39   Similarly there are different kinds of flesh—one kind for humans, another for animals, another for birds, and another for fish.
1Cr 15:40   There are also bodies in the heavens and bodies on the earth. The glory of the heavenly bodies is different from the glory of the earthly bodies.
1Cr 15:41   The sun has one kind of glory, while the moon and stars each have another kind. And even the stars differ from each other in their glory.
1Cr 15:42   It is the same way with the resurrection of the dead. Our earthly bodies are planted in the ground when we die, but they will be raised to live forever.
1Cr 15:43   Our bodies are buried in brokenness, but they will be raised in glory. They are buried in weakness, but they will be raised in strength.
1Cr 15:44   They are buried as natural human bodies, but they will be raised as spiritual bodies. For just as there are natural bodies, there are also spiritual bodies.
1Cr 15:45   The Scriptures tell us, "The first man, Adam, became a living person."[fn8] But the last Adam—that is, Christ—is a life-giving Spirit.
1Cr 15:46   What comes first is the natural body, then the spiritual body comes later.
1Cr 15:47   Adam, the first man, was made from the dust of the earth, whi

Act 9:1 Meanwhile, Saul was still breathing out murderous threats against the Lord's disciples. He went to the high priest

Act 9:2 and asked him for letters to the synagogues in Damascus, so that if he found any there who belonged to the Way, whether men or women, he might take them as prisoners to Jerusalem.

Act 9:3 As he neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him.

Act 9:4 He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, "Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?"

Act 9:5 "Who are you, Lord?" Saul asked. "I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting," he replied.

Act 9:6 "Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do."

Act 9:7 The men traveling with Saul stood there speechless; they heard the sound but did not see anyone.

Act 9:8 Saul got up from the ground, but when he opened his eyes he could see nothing. So they led him by the hand into Damascus.

Act 9:9 For three days he was blind, and did not eat or drink anything.

Act 9:10 In Damascus there was a disciple named Ananias. The Lord called to him in a vision, "Ananias!" "Yes, Lord," he answered.

Act 9:11 The Lord told him, "Go to the house of Judas on Straight Street and ask for a man from Tarsus named Saul, for he is praying.

Act 9:12 In a vision he has seen a man named Ananias come and place his hands on him to restore his sight."

Act 9:13 "Lord," Ananias answered, "I have heard many reports about this man and all the harm he has done to your saints in Jerusalem.

Act 9:14 And he has come here with authority from the chief priests to arrest all who call on your name."

Act 9:15 But the Lord said to Ananias, "Go! This man is my chosen instrument to carry my name before the Gentiles and their kings and before the people of Israel.

Act 9:16 I will show him how much he must suffer for my name."

Act 9:17 Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, "Brother Saul, the Lord--Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here--has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit."

Act 9:18 Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul's eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was baptized,

Act 9:19 and after taking some food, he regained his strength. Saul spent several days with the disciples in Damascus.

Act 9:20 At once he began to preach in the synagogues that Jesus is the Son of God.

Act 9:21 All those who heard him were astonished and asked, "Isn't he the man who raised havoc in Jerusalem among those who call on this name? And hasn't he come here to take them as prisoners to the chief priests?"

Act 9:22 Yet Saul grew more and more powerful and baffled the Jews living in Damascus by proving that Jesus is the Christ. [fn]

any observations so far?

This is going to be a very discussional class

Brandon: Acts9:2 the way

Tony: there you go

female: what do you want me to do?, then in verse 10, what is that you want me to do

Jim: he's has murderous threats in verse 10, now he's speaking for the Lord

Tony: yeah, he was speaking murderously... the rage against Christians, their sin of rejecting Jesus is getting worse of worse murderous, the progression of sin gets worse, the Pharisees gets worse and worsde

male: student, Saul calls Jesus Lord, so its relational, so is that what that means?

Tony: Yeah, Paul's history in theology, so he knows its the Lord, right, yeah

male: right

female: it is hard for you to kick against the goads, the natural path to follow God,... people skip over that, its crucial to understand, to fight against what you're supposed to follow after. The quick conversion Paul had, if Saul & Annias had not obey then all this would not have happened this way which was so crucial.

Mike: Saul got permission. another verse in the NT, "They will think they are doing God service but they killed the Christians

Tony: yeah, everyone was coming together to conspire to kill Jesus

Let's continue Acts11

Act 11:1 The apostles and the brothers throughout Judea heard that the Gentiles also had received the word of God.

Act 11:2 So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, the circumcised believers criticized him

Act 11:3 and said, "You went into the house of uncircumcised men and ate with them."

Act 11:4 Peter began and explained everything to them precisely as it had happened:

Act 11:5 "I was in the city of Joppa praying, and in a trance I saw a vision. I saw something like a large sheet being let down from heaven by its four corners, and it came down to where I was.

Act 11:6 I looked into it and saw four-footed animals of the earth, wild beasts, reptiles, and birds of the air.

Act 11:7 Then I heard a voice telling me, 'Get up, Peter. Kill and eat.'

Act 11:8 "I replied, 'Surely not, Lord! Nothing impure or unclean has ever entered my mouth.'

Act 11:9 "The voice spoke from heaven a second time, 'Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.'

Act 11:10 This happened three times, and then it was all pulled up to heaven again.

Act 11:11 "Right then three men who had been sent to me from Caesarea stopped at the house where I was staying.

Act 11:12 The Spirit told me to have no hesitation about going with them. These six brothers also went with me, and we entered the man's house.

Act 11:13 He told us how he had seen an angel appear in his house and say, 'Send to Joppa for Simon who is called Peter.

Act 11:14 He will bring you a message through which you and all your household will be saved.'

Act 11:15 "As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit came on them as he had come on us at the beginning.

Act 11:16 Then I remembered what the Lord had said: 'John baptized with [fn] water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.'

Act 11:17 So if God gave them the same gift as he gave us, who believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to think that I could oppose God?"

Act 11:18 When they heard this, they had no further objections and praised God, saying, "So then, God has granted even the Gentiles repentance unto life."

Act 11:19 Now those who had been scattered by the persecution in connection with Stephen traveled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus and Antioch, telling the message only to Jews.

Act 11:20 Some of them, however, men from Cyprus and Cyrene, went to Antioch and began to speak to Greeks also, telling them the good news about the Lord Jesus.

Act 11:21 The Lord's hand was with them, and a great number of people believed and turned to the Lord.

Act 11:22 News of this reached the ears of the church at Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to Antioch.

Act 11:23 When he arrived and saw the evidence of the grace of God, he was glad and encouraged them all to remain true to the Lord with all their hearts.

Act 11:24 He was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith, and a great number of people were brought to the Lord.

Act 11:25 Then Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul,

Act 11:26 and when he found him, he brought him to Antioch. So for a whole year Barnabas and Saul met with the church and taught great numbers of people. The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch.

Acts11:26 Christian is first mentioned

Act 11:27 During this time some prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch.

Act 11:28 One of them, named Agabus, stood up and through the Spirit predicted that a severe famine would spread over the entire Roman world. (This happened during the reign of Claudius.)

Act 11:29 The disciples, each according to his ability, decided to provide help for the brothers living in Judea.

Act 11:30 This they did, sending their gift to the elders by Barnabas and Saul.

Gal 1:1 Paul, an apostle--sent not from men nor by man, but by Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised him from the dead--

Gal 1:2 and all the brothers with me, To the churches in Galatia:

Gal 1:3 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ,

Gal 1:4 who gave himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father,

Gal 1:5 to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Gal 1:6 I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel--

Gal 1:7 which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ.

Gal 1:8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned!

Gal 1:9 As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let him be eternally condemned!

Write anything that sticks out to you, do you see any parallels three days, very interesting

Gal 1:10 Am I now trying to win the approval of men, or of God? Or am I trying to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ.

Gal 1:11 I want you to know, brothers, that the gospel I preached is not something that man made up.

Gal 1:12 I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it; rather, I received it by revelation from Jesus Christ.

Gal 1:13 For you have heard of my previous way of life in Judaism, how intensely I persecuted the church of God and tried to destroy it.

Gal 1:14 I was advancing in Judaism beyond many Jews of my own age and was extremely zealous for the traditions of my fathers.

Gal 1:15 But when God, who set me apart from birth [fn] and called me by his grace, was pleased

Gal 1:16 to reveal his Son in me so that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not consult any man,

Gal 1:17 nor did I go up to Jerusalem to see those who were apostles before I was, but I went immediately into Arabia and later returned to Damascus.

Gal 1:18 Then after three years, I went up to Jerusalem to get acquainted with Peter [fn] and stayed with him fifteen days.

Gal 1:19 I saw none of the other apostles--only James, the Lord's brother.

Gal 1:20 I assure you before God that what I am writing you is no lie.

Gal 1:21 Later I went to Syria and Cilicia.

Gal 1:22 I was personally unknown to the churches of Judea that are in Christ.

Let's continue Acts11

Acts11:19

Act 11:1 The apostles and the brothers throughout Judea heard that the Gentiles also had received the word of God.

Act 11:2 So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, the circumcised believers criticized him

Acts11:26 The first time mentioned "Christian"

Act 11:27 During this time some prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch.

Act 11:28 One of them, named Agabus, stood up and through the Spirit predicted that a severe famine would spread over the entire Roman world. (This happened during the reign of Claudius.)

Act 11:29 The disciples, each according to his ability, decided to provide help for the brothers living in Judea.

Act 11:30 This they did, sending their gift to the elders by Barnabas and Saul.

Act 12:1 It was about this time that King Herod arrested some who belonged to the church, intending to persecute them.

Act 12:2 He had James, the brother of John, put to death with the sword.

Act 12:25 When Barnabas and Saul had finished their mission, they returned from [fn] Jerusalem, taking with them John, also called Mark.

Act 13:1 In the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen (who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch) and Saul.

Act 13:2 While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, "Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them."

Act 13:3 So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off.

Act 13:4 The two of them, sent on their way by the Holy Spirit, went down to Seleucia and sailed from there to Cyprus.

Act 13:5 When they arrived at Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God in the Jewish synagogues. John was with them as their helper.

Act 13:6 They traveled through the whole island until they came to Paphos. There they met a Jewish sorcerer and false prophet named Bar-Jesus,

Act 13:7 who was an attendant of the proconsul, Sergius Paulus. The proconsul, an intelligent man, sent for Barnabas and Saul because he wanted to hear the word of God.

Act 13:8 But Elymas the sorcerer (for that is what his name means) opposed them and tried to turn the proconsul from the faith.

Act 13:9 Then Saul, who was also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked straight at Elymas and said,

Act 13:10 "You are a child of the devil and an enemy of everything that is right! You are full of all kinds of deceit and trickery. Will you never stop perverting the right ways of the Lord?

Act 13:11 Now the hand of the Lord is against you. You are going to be blind, and for a time you will be unable to see the light of the sun." Immediately mist and darkness came over him, and he groped about, seeking someone to lead him by the hand.

Act 13:12 When the proconsul saw what had happened, he believed, for he was amazed at the teaching about the Lord.

Act 13:13 From Paphos, Paul and his companions sailed to Perga in Pamphylia, where John left them to return to Jerusalem.

Act 13:14 From Perga they went on to Pisidian Antioch. On the Sabbath they entered the synagogue and sat down.

Act 13:15 After the reading from the Law and the Prophets, the synagogue rulers sent word to them, saying, "Brothers, if you have a message of encouragement for the people, please speak."

Act 13:16 Standing up, Paul motioned with his hand and said: "Men of Israel and you Gentiles who worship God, listen to me!

Act 13:17 The God of the people of Israel chose our fathers; he made the people prosper during their stay in Egypt, with mighty power he led them out of that country,

Act 13:18 he endured their conduct [fn] for about forty years in the desert,

Act 13:19 he overthrew seven nations in Canaan and gave their land to his people as their inheritance.

Act 13:20 All this took about 450 years. "After this, God gave them judges until the time of Samuel the prophet.

Act 13:21 Then the people asked for a king, and he gave them Saul son of Kish, of the tribe of Benjamin, who ruled forty years.

Act 13:22 After removing Saul, he made David their king. He testified concerning him: 'I have found David son of Jesse a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.'

Act 13:23 "From this man's descendants God has brought to Israel the Savior Jesus, as he promised.

Act 13:24 Before the coming of Jesus, John preached repentance and baptism to all the people of Israel.

Act 13:25 As John was completing his work, he said: 'Who do you think I am? I am not that one. No, but he is coming after me, whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.'

Act 13:26 "Brothers, children of Abraham, and you God-fearing Gentiles, it is to us that this message of salvation has been sent.

Act 13:27 The people of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize Jesus, yet in condemning him they fulfilled the words of the prophets that are read every Sabbath.

Act 13:28 Though they found no proper ground for a death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him executed.

Act 13:29 When they had carried out all that was written about him, they took him down from the tree and laid him in a tomb.

Act 13:30 But God raised him from the dead,

Act 13:31 and for many days he was seen by those who had traveled with him from Galilee to Jerusalem. They are now his witnesses to our people.

Act 13:32 "We tell you the good news: What God promised our fathers

Act 13:33 he has fulfilled for us, their children, by raising up Jesus. As it is written in the second Psalm: "'You are my Son; today I have become your Father. [fn]' [fn]

Act 13:34 The fact that God raised him from the dead, never to decay, is stated in these words: "'I will give you the holy and sure blessings promised to David.' [fn]

Act 13:35 So it is stated elsewhere: "'You will not let your Holy One see decay.' [fn]

Act 13:36 "For when David had served God's purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep; he was buried with his fathers and his body decayed.

Act 13:37 But the one whom God raised from the dead did not see decay.

Act 13:38 "Therefore, my brothers, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you.

Act 13:39 Through him everyone who believes is justified from everything you could not be justified from by the law of Moses.

Act 13:40 Take care that what the prophets have said does not happen to you:

Act 13:41 "'Look, you scoffers, wonder and perish, for I am going to do something in your days that you would never believe, even if someone told you.' [fn]"

Act 13:42 As Paul and Barnabas were leaving the synagogue, the people invited them to speak further about these things on the next Sabbath.

Act 13:43 When the congregation was dismissed, many of the Jews and devout converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas, who talked with them and urged them to continue in the grace of God.

Act 13:44 On the next Sabbath almost the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord.

Act 13:45 When the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy and talked abusively against what Paul was saying.

Act 13:46 Then Paul and Barnabas answered them boldly: "We had to speak the word of God to you first. Since you reject it and do not consider yourselves worthy of eternal life, we now turn to the Gentiles.

Act 13:47 For this is what the Lord has commanded us: "'I have made you [fn] a light for the Gentiles, that you [fn] may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.' [fn]"

Act 13:48 When the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and honored the word of the Lord; and all who were appointed for eternal life believed.

Act 13:49 The word of the Lord spread through the whole region.

Act 13:50 But the Jews incited the God-fearing women of high standing and the leading men of the city. They stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them from their region.

Act 13:51 So they shook the dust from their feet in protest against them and went to Iconium.

Act 13:52 And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.

Act 14:1 At Iconium Paul and Barnabas went as usual into the Jewish synagogue. There they spoke so effectively that a great number of Jews and Gentiles believed.

Act 14:2 But the Jews who refused to believe stirred up the Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brothers.

Act 14:3 So Paul and Barnabas spent considerable time there, speaking boldly for the Lord, who confirmed the message of his grace by enabling them to do miraculous signs and wonders.

Act 14:4 The people of the city were divided; some sided with the Jews, others with the apostles.

ACTS14:4 KEY VERSE

Act 14:5 There was a plot afoot among the Gentiles and Jews, together with their leaders, to mistreat them and stone them.

Act 14:6 But they found out about it and fled to the Lycaonian cities of Lystra and Derbe and to the surrounding country,

Act 14:7 where they continued to preach the good news.

Act 14:8 In Lystra there sat a man crippled in his feet, who was lame from birth and had never walked.

Act 14:9 He listened to Paul as he was speaking. Paul looked directly at him, saw that he had faith to be healed

Act 14:10 and called out, "Stand up on your feet!" At that, the man jumped up and began to walk.

Act 14:11 When the crowd saw what Paul had done, they shouted in the Lycaonian language, "The gods have come down to us in human form!"

Act 14:12 Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul they called Hermes because he was the chief speaker.

Act 14:13 The priest of Zeus, whose temple was just outside the city, brought bulls and wreaths to the city gates because he and the crowd wanted to offer sacrifices to them.

Act 14:14 But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of this, they tore their clothes and rushed out into the crowd, shouting:

Act 14:15 "Men, why are you doing this? We too are only men, human like you. We are bringing you good news, telling you to turn from these worthless things to the living God, who made heaven and earth and sea and everything in them.

Act 14:16 In the past, he let all nations go their own way.

Act 14:17 Yet he has not left himself without testimony: He has shown kindness by giving you rain from heaven and crops in their seasons; he provides you with plenty of food and fills your hearts with joy."

Act 14:18 Even with these words, they had difficulty keeping the crowd from sacrificing to them.

Act 14:19 Then some Jews came from Antioch and Iconium and won the crowd over. They stoned Paul and dragged him outside the city, thinking he was dead.

Act 14:20 But after the disciples had gathered around him, he got up and went back into the city. The next day he and Barnabas left for Derbe.

in one verse they called Paul & Barnabas gods then now they want to kill them

Act 14:21 They preached the good news in that city and won a large number of disciples. Then they returned to Lystra, Iconium and Antioch,

Act 14:22 strengthening the disciples and encouraging them to remain true to the faith. "We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God," they said.

Act 14:23 Paul and Barnabas appointed elders [fn] for them in each church and, with prayer and fasting, committed them to the Lord, in whom they had put their trust.

Act 14:24 After going through Pisidia, they came into Pamphylia,

Act 14:25 and when they had preached the word in Perga, they went down to Attalia.

Act 14:26 From Attalia they sailed back to Antioch, where they had been committed to the grace of God for the work they had now completed.

Act 14:27 On arriving there, they gathered the church together and reported all that God had done through them and how he had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles.

Act 14:28 And they stayed there a long time with the disciples.

Gal 1:23 They only heard the report: "The man who formerly persecuted us is now preaching the faith he once tried to destroy."

Gal 1:24 And they praised God because of me.

Acts15 is prior to the book of Galatians

so this is all background to Galatians, in Galatians 6 this big letters I write to you, means this is a very personal letter

Galatians1 ESV

Paul, an apostle--sent not from men nor by man, but by Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised him from the dead--

GALATIANS 1:8 memory verse due Sept 10, 2012

Gal 1:9 As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let him be eternally condemned!

Gal 1:23 They only heard the report: "The man who formerly persecuted us is now preaching the faith he once tried to destroy."

Gal 1:24 And they praised God because of me.

Gal 2:1 Fourteen years later I went up again to Jerusalem, this time with Barnabas. I took Titus along also.

Gal 2:2 I went in response to a revelation and set before them the gospel that I preach among the Gentiles. But I did this privately to those who seemed to be leaders, for fear that I was running or had run my race in vain.

Gal 2:3 Yet not even Titus, who was with me, was compelled to be circumcised, even though he was a Greek.

Gal 2:4 [This matter arose] because some false brothers had infiltrated our ranks to spy on the freedom we have in Christ Jesus and to make us slaves.

Gal 2:5 We did not give in to them for a moment, so that the truth of the gospel might remain with you.

Gal 2:6 As for those who seemed to be important--whatever they were makes no difference to me; God does not judge by external appearance--those men added nothing to my message.

Gal 2:7 On the contrary, they saw that I had been entrusted with the task of preaching the gospel to the Gentiles, [fn] just as Peter had been to the Jews. [fn]

Gal 2:8 For God, who was at work in the ministry of Peter as an apostle to the Jews, was also at work in my ministry as an apostle to the Gentiles.

Gal 2:9 James, Peter [fn] and John, those reputed to be pillars, gave me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship when they recognized the grace given to me. They agreed that we should go to the Gentiles, and they to the Jews.

Gal 2:10 All they asked was that we should continue to remember the poor, the very thing I was eager to do.

Gal 2:11 When Peter came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he was clearly in the wrong.

Gal 2:12 Before certain men came from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles. But when they arrived, he began to draw back and separate himself from the Gentiles because he was afraid of those who belonged to the circumcision group.

Gal 2:13 The other Jews joined him in his hypocrisy, so that by their hypocrisy even Barnabas was led astray.

Gal 2:14 When I saw that they were not acting in line with the truth of the gospel, I said to Peter in front of them all, "You are a Jew, yet you live like a Gentile and not like a Jew. How is it, then, that you force Gentiles to follow Jewish customs?

Gal 2:15 "We who are Jews by birth and not 'Gentile sinners'

Gal 2:16 know that a man is not justified by observing the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by observing the law, because by observing the law no one will be justified.

Gal 2:17 "If, while we seek to be justified in Christ, it becomes evident that we ourselves are sinners, does that mean that Christ promotes sin? Absolutely not!

Gal 2:18 If I rebuild what I destroyed, I prove that I am a lawbreaker.

Gal 2:19 For through the law I died to the law so that I might live for God.

Gal 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

GAL2:20 memory verse due Sept 10, 2012 on quiz

Gal 2:21 I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!" [fn]

Gal 3:1 You foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? Before your very eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified.

Gal 3:2 I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by observing the law, or by believing what you heard?

Gal 3:3 Are you so foolish? After beginning with the Spirit, are you now trying to attain your goal by human effort?

Gal 3:4 Have you suffered so much for nothing--if it really was for nothing?

Gal 3:5 Does God give you his Spirit and work miracles among you because you observe the law, or because you believe what you heard?

Gal 3:6 Consider Abraham: "He believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness." [fn]

Gal 3:7 Understand, then, that those who believe are children of Abraham.

Gal 3:8 The Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, and announced the gospel in advance to Abraham: "All nations will be blessed through you." [fn]

Gal 3:9 So those who have faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.

Gal 3:10 All who rely on observing the law are under a curse, for it is written: "Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law." [fn]

Gal 3:11 Clearly no one is justified before God by the law, because, "The righteous will live by faith." [fn]

Gal 3:12 The law is not based on faith; on the contrary, "The man who does these things will live by them." [fn]

Gal 3:13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: "Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree." [fn]

Gal 3:14 He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.

Gal 3:15 Brothers, let me take an example from everyday life. Just as no one can set aside or add to a human covenant that has been duly established, so it is in this case.

Gal 3:16 The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. The Scripture does not say "and to seeds," meaning many people, but "and to your seed," [fn] meaning one person, who is Christ.

Gal 3:17 What I mean is this: The law, introduced 430 years later, does not set aside the covenant previously established by God and thus do away with the promise.

Gal 3:18 For if the inheritance depends on the law, then it no longer depends on a promise; but God in his grace gave it to Abraham through a promise.

Gal 3:19 What, then, was the purpose of the law? It was added because of transgressions until the Seed to whom the promise referred had come. The law was put into effect through angels by a mediator.

Gal 3:20 A mediator, however, does not represent just one party; but God is one.

Gal 3:21 Is the law, therefore, opposed to the promises of God? Absolutely not! For if a law had been given that could impart life, then righteousness would certainly have come by the law.

Gal 3:22 But the Scripture declares that the whole world is a prisoner of sin, so that what was promised, being given through faith in Jesus Christ, might be given to those who believe.

Gal 3:23 Before this faith came, we were held prisoners by the law, locked up until faith should be revealed.

Gal 3:24 So the law was put in charge to lead us to Christ [fn] that we might be justified by faith.

Gal 3:25 Now that faith has come, we are no longer under the supervision of the law.

Gal 3:26 You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus,

Gal 3:27 for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.

Gal 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

Gal 3:29 If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.

Gal 4:1 What I am saying is that as long as the heir is a child, he is no different from a slave, although he owns the whole estate.

Gal 4:2 He is subject to guardians and trustees until the time set by his father.

Gal 4:3 So also, when we were children, we were in slavery under the basic principles of the world.

Gal 4:4 But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under law,

Gal 4:5 to redeem those under law, that we might receive the full rights of sons.

Gal 4:6 Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, "Abba, [fn] Father."

Gal 4:7 So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and since you are a son, God has made you also an heir.

Gal 4:8 Formerly, when you did not know God, you were slaves to those who by nature are not gods.

Gal 4:9 But now that you know God--or rather are known by God--how is it that you are turning back to those weak and miserable principles? Do you wish to be enslaved by them all over again?

Gal 4:10 You are observing special days and months and seasons and years!

Gal 4:11 I fear for you, that somehow I have wasted my efforts on you.

Gal 4:12 I plead with you, brothers, become like me, for I became like you. You have done me no wrong.

Gal 4:13 As you know, it was because of an illness that I first preached the gospel to you.

Gal 4:14 Even though my illness was a trial to you, you did not treat me with contempt or scorn. Instead, you welcomed me as if I were an angel of God, as if I were Christ Jesus himself.

Gal 4:15 What has happened to all your joy? I can testify that, if you could have done so, you would have torn out your eyes and given them to me.

Gal 4:16 Have I now become your enemy by telling you the truth?

Gal 4:17 Those people are zealous to win you over, but for no good. What they want is to alienate you [from us], so that you may be zealous for them.

Gal 4:18 It is fine to be zealous, provided the purpose is good, and to be so always and not just when I am with you.

Gal 4:19 My dear children, for whom I am again in the pains of childbirth until Christ is formed in you,

Gal 4:20 how I wish I could be with you now and change my tone, because I am perplexed about you!

Gal 4:21 Tell me, you who want to be under the law, are you not aware of what the law says?

Gal 4:22 For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the slave woman and the other by the free woman.

Gal 4:23 His son by the slave woman was born in the ordinary way; but his son by the free woman was born as the result of a promise.

Gal 4:24 These things may be taken figuratively, for the women represent two covenants. One covenant is from Mount Sinai and bears children who are to be slaves: This is Hagar.

Gal 4:25 Now Hagar stands for Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present city of Jerusalem, because she is in slavery with her children.

Gal 4:26 But the Jerusalem that is above is free, and she is our mother.

Gal 4:27 For it is written: "Be glad, O barren woman, who bears no children; break forth and cry aloud, you who have no labor pains; because more are the children of the desolate woman than of her who has a husband." [fn]

Gal 4:28 Now you, brothers, like Isaac, are children of promise.

Gal 4:29 At that time the son born in the ordinary way persecuted the son born by the power of the Spirit. It is the same now.

Gal 4:30 But what does the Scripture say? "Get rid of the slave woman and her son, for the slave woman's son will never share in the inheritance with the free woman's son." [fn]

Gal 4:31 Therefore, brothers, we are not children of the slave woman, but of the free woman.

Gal 5:1 It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.

Gal 5:2 Mark my words! I, Paul, tell you that if you let yourselves be circumcised, Christ will be of no value to you at all.

Gal 5:3 Again I declare to every man who lets himself be circumcised that he is obligated to obey the whole law.

Gal 5:4 You who are trying to be justified by law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace.

Gal 5:5 But by faith we eagerly await through the Spirit the righteousness for which we hope.

Gal 5:6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.

Gal 5:7 You were running a good race. Who cut in on you and kept you from obeying the truth?

Gal 5:8 That kind of persuasion does not come from the one who calls you.

Gal 5:9 "A little yeast works through the whole batch of dough."

Gal 5:10 I am confident in the Lord that you will take no other view. The one who is throwing you into confusion will pay the penalty, whoever he may be.

Gal 5:11 Brothers, if I am still preaching circumcision, why am I still being persecuted? In that case the offense of the cross has been abolished.

Gal 5:12 As for those agitators, I wish they would go the whole way and emasculate themselves!

Gal 5:13 You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature [fn]; rather, serve one another in love.

Gal 5:14 The entire law is summed up in a single command: "Love your neighbor as yourself." [fn]

Gal 5:15 If you keep on biting and devouring each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.

Gal 5:16 So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature.

Gal 5:17 For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want.

Gal 5:18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under law.

Gal 5:19 The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery;

Gal 5:20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions

Gal 5:21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Gal 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,

Gal 5:23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

Gal 5:24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires.

Gal 5:25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.

Gal 5:26 Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.

Gal 6:1 Brothers, if someone is caught in a sin, you who are spiritual should restore him gently. But watch yourself, or you also may be tempted.

Gal 6:2 Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.

Gal 6:3 If anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself.

Gal 6:4 Each one should test his own actions. Then he can take pride in himself, without comparing himself to somebody else,

Gal 6:5 for each one should carry his own load.

Gal 6:6 Anyone who receives instruction in the word must share all good things with his instructor.

Gal 6:7 Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.

Gal 6:8 The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature [fn] will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.

Gal 6:9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

Gal 6:10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.

Gal 6:11 See what large letters I use as I write to you with my own hand!

Gal 6:12 Those who want to make a good impression outwardly are trying to compel you to be circumcised. The only reason they do this is to avoid being persecuted for the cross of Christ.

Gal 6:13 Not even those who are circumcised obey the law, yet they want you to be circumcised that they may boast about your flesh.

Gal 6:14 May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which [fn] the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.

Gal 6:15 Neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything; what counts is a new creation.

Gal 6:16 Peace and mercy to all who follow this rule, even to the Israel of God.

Gal 6:17 Finally, let no one cause me trouble, for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus.

Gal 6:18 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brothers. Amen.

So did reading Acts help you understand

Did it help you to read the whole book of Galatians?

class: yes you get the whole picture

female: so you don't take it out of context

Tony: yeah. In Genesis, God breathed, God puts His Spirit into man. God's word is inspired by Him, as we read, we bring life in us

Share the big pictures of what is going on as we read through Galatians,

Class:

Daniel: repentance

...Truth

...Grace

Faith

justification

gospel

law

love

Promise/Flesh

Spirit

Kindness

Freedom

works

Tony: They're moving from the law back into freedom

class:

two covenants, one from above causes us to be free, the other enslaves

self control

Spirit.

circumcision/uncircumcision

Tony: In reading Acts11, are you hearing where Paul is at, he's going over the same information in Galatians.

I'm with freedom, liberty within salvation & also in sanctification

We don't have to do anything to be sanctified, its just free, its walking in the Spirit, just as salvation is

God's grace bestowed upon us gives us freedom, we're free from the law, we're free to NOT sin

The circumcision/uncircumcision is talking about culture, the Jews & Gentiles

Paul was talking about bringing legalism into the churches of Galatia

What do Galatians1-2 speak of

Class:

about Paul, who he is

3-4 freedom, from the law to freedom, justification, faith

Tony: Paul is dealing with doctrine in Gal3-4

Class:

nothing has changed since Abraham

Tony: yeah that its about our need for Christ

what about Gal5-6

Class

Tony: Gal5-6 apply application

Gal emphasis is GRACE

Gal1-2 Paul's resume

Gal3-4 Doctrine

Gal5-6 application

15ad Jerusalem counsel

Jesus Christ crucified in ad30

this book Galatians was written early before the counsel,

Galatians is the hub of the wheel, then Romans and all the other books is tied into this book.

In Galatians Paul talks about carnal Christians, Galatians is paramount to reading Romans as well.

antithesis, contrasts throughout the whole book

The big picture is freedom for salvation & freedom in sanctification, we do nothing to get this, we're conditioned to work for it but God's grace is free, His love is divine.

We can only do it by abiding in Him

The flesh corrupts

Read the Bible, be in the Spirit, abide in Him.

any questions any comments?

Jim: Freedom in salvation & freedom in sanctification,

Tony: You don't have to do anything, in the next few weeks we're going to see that

The authorship, there's not much doubts that Paul is the author.

Paul is writing this letter because he's blown away that they're turning away from what the gospel of Christ gives

early 42-50ad Paul wrote Galatians

Andrew: Jn8:31-36 I see the correlation

Tony: read it.

Andrew: (reads Jn8:31-36)

Tony: that's cool, we see this character in Paul, probably the same age as Jesus but never crossed paths with Jesus except for the Damascus experience then Jesus talks Paul down

Paul is right in line with Jesus

Paul even says he was taught by the Lord, Paul gets everything from the Lord

everything he was the zeal, the legalism, he turned it to use for Christ

This is how we should be

How many are on Populi?

I'm going to post questions.

answer and respond to others too, its not graded, but its to get our minds going.

We'll be doing something with the Galatians book typed out handout. Mark notes bring it with you in two weeks Aug10, 2012

Nancy is going to Spain, she'll be taking this class in Spain, so keep her in prayer

There's no right or wrong responses in this, so at the end of the semester bring this printout in, you get one point, with the main point of the message.

I'm going to read the verses that are our memory verses, they will be on your quiz

Gal1:8 But though we or an angel...

Gal2:20

you're done for the day.

The heart of Believers Plugged In is to see all believers, whether new in their faith or well seasoned in their walk, rooted and built up in the Lord. We desire to dissect the Word of God and get to the roots of the biblical foundations of our faith. To do this, we come together every Tuesday night for a time of worship and in depth study of the Bible. Following this corporate time, the body breaks into small groups to complete the 14-week small group study curriculum. It is in this small group setting that true fellowship, discussion, and biblical understanding is developed. Small group leaders serve to come alongside each individual and encourage them in their faith. Upon completion of the small group curriculum, each believer gains a deeper understanding the Word of God, newfound relationships with fellow believers, and a desire to stay plugged into the Source through serving in a ministry themselves.

About Me

My photo
God saved me 6.5 years ago, a sinner, by His grace, His only begotten Son Jesus Christ, whom He sent to die for all the sins of mankind. I love God with all of my heart. Learning about Him daily and living for His good pleasure and seeking His will and guidance daily. God loves you. God loves everyone. Please give God a chance to reveal Himself to you by asking Him to show you who He is, ask Him with a genuine, sincere heart, then expect God to answer you. When God does, you will never be the same. Then please write and share your experience with me and anyone who will listen and see what amazing things God rewards you for doing this. Jesus loves you.
